With summer here, many families are planning vacations. Do you know the basics of protecting your home and identity while you're away? Here are some tips for securing your identity and valuables so your family trip is as safe and enjoyable as possible.
- Use a PIN-based ATM Card instead of a signature-based Debit Card
- Closely monitor who has your credit cards, and for how long. Be sure to check your bank or credit card balance often via phone or online.
- Let your bank and credit card companies know that you will be out of town. Many banks will put a hold on your account if unusual charges or locations come up. This helps prevent fraud, but can also hinder your plans if you are trying to pay for dinner or souvenirs and the charges are rejected! Be sure your bank has your cell phone number on file.
- Never share your specific vacation plans on social networking sites. You never know who will gain access to it, even if your privacy settings are on.
- Be sure your home is secured – many people overlook unlocked windows or leave a car in the driveway with a garage door opener in it. Be sure to double check the “little things†before you leave.
- Never leave personal information or valuables out in a hotel room or rental car. If you must leave paperwork, cards, or cash, use the hotel safe whenever available.
