We welcome the new year with the expectation that our community and our new laws on driving for teens will hopeful helps us not
face as many needless tragedies involving teenage drivers. Recently, a new state law governing those young motorists went into effect, and the intention is that its provisions will reduce the distractions, and improve the training, that those drivers face.  Ergo, fewer teenage fatalities on our roads.
The new laws on driving for teen motorists requires more hours behind the wheel learning for teen drivers who have their permit. This increased from 50 hours to 65 hours required, including ten nighttime hours and five poor weather hours of driving. The new laws on driving also state that a teen driver may only have one passenger under the age of 18 who is not an immediate family member with them in the car for the first 6 months while they have their permit, unless they are accompanied by a legal parent or guardian.
But that does not mean that ordinary vigilance by parents and others concerned with teenagers should be ignored. Contrary, we must redouble our efforts to make sure our young drivers know how dangerous getting behind a wheel is.
