Driving while texting is super risky. Here are three questions to get the conversation going with your teen about the dangers of texting while driving.
Question 1. “Have you ever seen someone driving in an unsafe way because of talking or texting on their phone?â€
Making arbitrary rules works well when kids are 5, but not so well when they are 16. One of the best ways to keep your child safe on the road is to help them think through the consequences of risky driving behavior. This question does that.
Question 2. “What do you think you can do to stay safe on the road?â€
After your teen has identified risky driving situations with you, you want to get them to think through how to avoid these situations. By talking this through in advance they are less likely to use their cellphone while driving.
Question 3. “What should the rules and consequences be (if you break the rules)?'
Have your teen help you set the rules of using a cellphone in the car. This helps them take ownership of it. You still have to enforce the rules as the parent, but by involving your teenager in the process you will get a more compliant teen.
